Today we spent the day at sea on a beautiful catamaran to watch the whales in Hervey Bay. The sky was perfectly blue but it was a bit windy and cold. Today was the first day of the season: indeed, this week the first whales have started to go down South with their calves.
This morning we left at 7:30 from the harbour with 23 people including the crew (a lovely couple). We struggled to find whales and finally saw a pod of two quite playful. Then, we followed two whales very quiet up to Fraser Island.
Next, we had a beautiful lunch buffet on board and we chatted with a few interesting Australian couples (we were the only foreigners tourists on board, which was great!).
On the afternoon, we came close to two whales on our way back to the Harbour. We finished our day at sea at 4:30 pm.
Unfortunately the whales weren't inquisitive at all and they were just swimming around. Which is a shame concerning the reputation of Hervey Bay. But we really enjoyed ourselves and had a wonderful day! Anyway, we'll come back before the end of the season on our way to Cairns :-)
Tonight, we had a lovely dinner with our hosts: chicken with strawberries. It was surprisingly delicious !
